Abstract

Language occupies a very vital position in the life of a people because of its usefulness as a pivot for socio-economic development. Language needs literature in order to restore life to a dying nation. Literature is the mirror that x-rays the level of growth and development as well as the ills and follies of any nation. Thus, the French language and literature are essential tools for national development. One wonders why French
language and literature are being relegated to the background in our Colleges of Education and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria. They are not given the attention they deserve in our institutions and even in our society in general. This paper therefore, examines the importance of French language and literature as vital tools for national development. Problems militating against the teaching and learning of French language and literature in Nigeria are discussed. It recommends ways of reviving French language and literature in our society so as to enhance national development.
