Abstract

The commodification of tourism and culture has attracted much interest amongst practitioners, researchers, governments and host communities. The debate as to the positive impacts of tourism is gaining momentum. What is new is the understanding of the role tourism plays in national development and the sustenance of democracy. This paper demonstrates that tourism plays a facilitating role in nation building. The attainment of the 8th Millennium Development Goal (MDG) has been identified as a
veritable bridge through which this interconnectivity can be appreciated.
